Job Description
A 950 Front Loader Sewer and Watermain Mainline Operator is responsible for operating heavy equipment on sewer and watermain construction sites. The operator ensures safe and efficient handling of materials, supports pipe crews in excavation and backfilling, and maintains site productivity in compliance with project specifications, safety standards, and union agreements.
Main Duties
Equipment Operation
Operate 950 front-end loader to move, load, and transport materials such as gravel, sand, clay, and excavated soil.
Support sewer and watermain crews by loading bedding material, backfilling trenches, and stockpiling aggregates.
Site Preparation & Maintenance
Maintain haul roads and stockpile areas to optimize site logistics.
Conduct daily equipment inspections, fueling, lubrication, and minor maintenance.
Safety & Compliance
Follow all Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) standards and MTO/municipal regulations.
Work in coordination with pipelayers, labourers, and foremen to ensure trench safety and minimize hazards.
Ensure compliance with Local 793 collective agreement terms for hours, overtime, and site conduct.
Coordination & Support
Communicate with site foreman to align with project schedules.
Work closely with survey/layout crews to maintain line and grade.
Assist in mobilization/demobilization of site equipment when required.
Qualifications
Mandatory
Member in good standing with IUOE Local 793 (Hoisting & Portable).
Demonstrated experience operating Caterpillar 950 (or equivalent) front-end loader in sewer/watermain mainline applications.
Valid Ontario driver’s license (Class G minimum).
Strong knowledge of trench safety, soil types, and sewer/watermain construction processes.
Ability to read grade stakes and work with survey crews.
Preferred
Completion of an apprenticeship program or equivalent union training through Local 793’s Operating Engineers Training Institute of Ontario (OETIO).
Working at Heights and Confined Space Awareness certifications.
Minimum 2-3 years of heavy civil construction experience in sewer and watermain.
Good communication skills and ability to work effectively in a crew environment.
Mechanical aptitude for basic troubleshooting and daily equipment care.
