Overview

This one’s for the thrill-seekers. As a Crane Operator, you’ll maintain and operate mobile cranes that raise, lower, or move literal tons of material — up to 16,000 pounds at a time. You’ll just need a certificate of qualification to get started.

Skills You’ll Need

  • The ability to work at great heights
  • Coordination and manual dexterity
  • Solid communication skills (think hand signals and vocal cues)
  • The strength and stamina to safely lift items weighing over 25 kg

What You’ll Do

  • Conduct pre-operational inspections
  • Assemble, disassemble, and transport cranes
  • Set up, position, and stabilize the crane before the lift
  • Perform various rigging procedures
  • Maintain the equipment
  • Plan your lifts (calculate crane capacity, determine load weights, etc.)

Role Requirements

To become a Crane Operator, you’ll need to meet the following requirements.

  • Graduate high school
  • Pass a written exam
  • Complete training: 6,000 hours
  • 5,520 on the job and 480 in school
