Did you grow up playing with toy dump trucks and excavators? Your dreams can become reality with a job in heavy equipment operation. Use machinery to move materials and earth around job sites and onto trucks. Take care of your equipment with regular maintenance and occasional repairs.

Skills You’ll Need

  • Some math know-how (you’ll need to calculate lifts)
  • Understanding of blueprints, manufacturer manuals, and other relevant docs
  • The ability to obtain the necessary equipment for the job and oversee its use
  • Knowledge of your specific equipment, including the ability to maintain each vehicle
  • Problem-solving skills (What’s behind a technical problem, and how can you fix it?)

What You’ll Do

  • Operate heavy equipment to move, load, and grade materials (earth, rock, gravel, and more)
  • Adhere to company and regulatory requirements for safe equipment operation
  • Use paving and surfacing equipment to spread, lay, or compact concrete or asphalt
  • Operate power shovels to excavate pits, quarries, or open pit mines

Role Requirements

To become a Heavy Equipment Operator, you just need a high school diploma! You’ll learn the rest on the job.
