Position Profile

Reporting to the Director of Construction, the Construction Inspector is responsible for the inspection of workmanship, materials and construction procedures on assigned projects to ensure that specifications are met at each stage of the project. The Construction Inspector will comment and act upon potential issues arising from contract drawings, specifications and/or field conditions. Under the supervision of the Construction Manager and Project Manager, the Construction Inspector will provide inspection and record keeping services for the installation of all development related works such as earthworks, underground servicing, secondary road works and lot grading conformance. The inspector is responsible for performing field and resident inspection and assisting in contract administration duties. This individual will carry out field surveys to assist with document preparation, including plans and drawings and will apply standard construction inspection and administration techniques, procedures, and criteria throughout the construction phase of the assignment. Additionally, the Construction Inspector will develop and maintain a productive relationship with clients, contractors, utility companies and municipalities, and act appropriately on their concerns.

 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Records as-constructed information
  • Prepares as-constructed drawings
  • Peer reviews as-constructed submission documents
  • Monitors and documents construction site activities and discussions
  • Advises the contractor and Project Manager of any observed deviation from the approved design, or any safety or environmental issues
  • Obtains and records services as-built information
  • Advises Project Manager of any potential contractor extra work claims or potential cost/time saving observations
  • Provides Quality Assurance inspections in accordance with applicable Ontario Provincial Standard Specifications, Ontario Building Code, Regional Standards and Municipal Standards
  • Prepare inspection reports in a timely manner
  • Completes grading checks
  • Records invert information for proposed and/or existing infrastructure
  • Inspects curb stops
  • Reviews CCTV inspections
  • Updates/completes deficiency lists
  • Submits final as-constructed drawings to appropriate Municipality for release of securities
  • Coordinating 3rd party field testing & Inspections for Compaction, Concrete and Asphalt
  • Interprets construction drawings and specifications and inspections to ensure compliance with the design
  • Observes and records the work of the contractor on construction projects and ensures adherence to contract specifications
  • Prepares monthly summaries of quantities for work completed by the contractor for payment
  • Coordinates repairs to conform with respective Municipalities security/Line of Credit release requirements including CCTV/Mandrel/Air/Manhole/CB/Sewer Rehabilitation/Aboveground deficiencies (concrete, asphalt and landscaping repairs)
  • Coordination and attendance at construction meetings and minute taking both internal and external work
  • Provides office assistance for the preparation of contract documents for tenders and design reviews
  • Assists with the preparation of quantity take-offs and cost estimates
  • Assists with the preparation of contract documents and specifications for project tendering
  • Maintains a collaborative working relationship with approval authorities, municipalities, contractors and clients
  • Maintains a positive rapport with the public

 

Key Deliverables

  • Keeps daily detailed, accurate and up-to-date records including a project diary of as-constructed drawings and related information, and submits on a timely basis to appropriate Municipalities to obtain the release of securities
  • Closely monitors and records construction site activities, including contractor work and schedule, to ensure compliance with design and specifications, and advises the Project Manager and contractors in a timely manner of any observed deviations, including health and safety or environmental considerations, and in-so-doing averts potential incidents, errors or project delays
  • Demonstrates consistency and competency in completing quality assurance inspections ensuring that all construction work is completed in accordance with applicable Ontario Provincial Standard Specifications, Ontario Building Code, Regional Standards and Municipal Standards
